We Are In Limbo

WE ARE IN LIMBO FOR THE TIME BEING

As of 11/04/13 you will note, all the Dropbox links are locked out for now. Once again, it has become increasingly difficult to find a place to conveniently share the movie suites with you. The search is on, but it may take a bit of time, since we will no doubt have to rename and encrypt all the files once again to protect the true-hearted. Of course many of the Deposit links are still up, but they will only last a measly 90 days, so it is barely a stop-gap that helps no-one. I will keep you posted on any changes, so stay tuned.   -MJ

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 1

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 1
Music by John Williams

In a singular moment, it became apparent that although there are numerous H.P. compilations floating around out there on the cloud, it occurred to me that there was nothing that brought the score highlights of H.P. from beginning to end. This then is a tribute to all of the Harry Potter Scores as well as the motion pictures that will be enjoyed for many, many years to come. Presented here is the Harry Potter Symphony with a total timing of 1:39:58. True it is not actually a movie suite, but it is close enough to share! I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

In the first movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: Sorcerers and Chambers, with the music composed by Mr. Williams. He introduced us to the simple yet effective Hedwig's Theme that you will hear throughout all of the movements so it is fitting that we begin at the beginning. With a timing of 28:16 this whirls us into the Wizarding World quite nicely, thank you.

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 2
Music by Patrick Doyle and John Williams

In the second movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: Prisoner and Goblet, which starts with the continued scoring by Mr. Williams and ends with Mr. Doyles' excellent phrasing. Harry and his friends are growing up and the themes presented here do a wonderful job of representing that. Sure, there are many moments of lightness and discovery, but there is also the foreboding sense of evil around every corner. With a timing of 27:25, I am sure you will enjoy this.  -MJ

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 3
Music by Nicholas Hooper

In the third movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: Phoenix and the Prince with scoring by Mr. Hooper who brings a new turn of themes to the tale of Harry Potter. With vintage sound of horns, pipes as well as full orchestra, Mr. Hooper brings us into the story beginning with celebratory cues that soon turn darkly serious. Harry's life changes as he learns more about the Wizarding World, more about his mortal enemies and how this music draws us into the center of the tale. With a timing of 22:07, this is over before you realize it. Enjoy while you can.  -MJ

In this the fourth movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: The Deathly Hollows, with scoring by Mr. Desplat who finishes the Symphony with a twisting, turning, flash of brilliance. The music fills one with dread and hope as we are taken into the final throes of good vs. evil, which is a fitting conclusion to our journey with Harry and the Wizarding World. The Legend of The Lone Ranger Movie Suite

Legend of the Lone Ranger, The Suite
Music by John Barry

Taken as a whole, this movie suite from 1981 is representative of what Mr. Barry was putting out in the early 80's when he was so very busy with James Bond scores and the like. This has a very down on the farm attitude (or is it a western attitude?) that seems just about right. It's obvious that this was not an action picture, so other than the requisite William Tell Overture 3/4 of the way through, we have some themes that beg you to sit back and relaxe as you listen. With a timing of 16:58 this demonstrates where we've been and it is an enjoyable reminder. I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

The Lone Ranger Movie Suite (2013)

The Lone Ranger Suite
Music by Hans Zimmer

In this recent 2013 remake, Mr. Zimmer has stirred the pot of previous western scores to bring us an imaginative movie suite that feels like Goldsmith, sounds like Morricone yet is without a doubt all Zimmer. The merits of the movie aside this music builds quickly, pulling back on the reigns when necessary, but pushing ahead to the prerequisite William Tell Overture which Mr. Zimmer has added his own flourishes to as well. When this suite comes to a conclusion you wonder why you are not breathless from exhaustion. With a timing of 29:49, I hope you enjoy this romp.  -MJ

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Suite

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Suite
Music by Jeremy Soule

Ah yes, we have another quandary. Does a video-game soundtrack suite constitute or even come close to a movie suite? If we showcase a video game suite, but then call it a movie suite, can we get away with offering it here to our listeners? I say sure! Why not? This music was given to me and after repeated listening sessions (after all there are many CD's with over 4 hours of music) we have a suite that attempts to bridge the narrowing chasm between motion picture and video gamer's paradise. With plenty of synthesizer, orchestra and a bit of choral voices thrown in for good measure, we have a suite that forces you to listen, and as you do, something happens that is amazing...you become lost in the music. With a long running time of 41:50 this does take an effort to listen in one sitting, but I think you'll really enjoy this in bits and pieces or all at once. Oh yeah, for the next post we'll be back to movie suites. I do promise.  -MJ

Samson And Delilah Movie Suite
Music by Victor Young

In this 1949 epic Bible story, we have a movie suite that delivers drama, lavishly crafted strings and all the requisite motifs expected to carry one of history's well known romances. Mr. Young was nominated for an academy award for this music yet losing to Franz Waxman's Sunset Boulevard in 1951. It seems that Hollywood was growing tired of the biblical Epics. Still, with a timing of 23:26, this delivers a classic punch that is entertaining to say the least. Sure do hope you enjoy!  -MJ

In this fantasy-adventure yarn from 1980, we are presented with our first movie suite from John Scott, a prolific composer who brings to the listener wonderful motif's by horns and trumpets, lushly orchestrated strings as well as dramatic passages that defied the normal experience back in the day. With a dabbling of synthesizer sounds to keep it interesting, Mr. Scott's sound is refreshing and I find it hard to imagine I just re-discovered his music. With a timing of 20:25, I really hope you enjoy this vintage work.  -MJ

Jack The Giant Killer Movie Suite

Jack The Giant Killer Suite
Music by Paul Sawtell & Bert Shefter

This is the original movie suite from 1962 that shows that although we now have synthesizers to assist with the task of scoring a fantasy adventure, things have not really changed too much. The two composers were Hollywood veterans who had both worked on a wide range of horror and "B" movies for various studios that came together and did a pretty good job. The main theme that starts this suite is bombastic, full of energy and filled with hope. The listening experience does taper off into a melo-dramatic barrage of motifs and cues that made me think I was listening to a love story instead of a work of fantasy. With timing of 17:48, this is over quickly, but not before we have some fun. I hope you enjoy this classic.  -MJ

Jack the Giant Slayer Suite
Music by John Ottman

In this 2013 remake of a classic Mr. Ottman has taken on the composer's baton to bring us a vision of mayhem and music that works quite well. Although much of the music to this work of fantasy was simply mood, it was still possible to work this into a cohesive composition that entertains the listener from start to finish. With a grand orchestra, a smattering of choral voices to add depth as well as the tried and true synthesizer for good measure, we end up with a timing for 24:05. There are still orchestral movie suites out there and I will continue to locate them for you. I hope you enjoy!  -MJ

Game Of Thrones Season Three Suite

Game of Thrones Season Three Suite
Music by Ramin Djawadi

In the third installment for this 2013 mini-series, Mr. Djawadi has become introspective as he weaves his haunting notes of betrayal and dispair. So much of this music was simply mood, yet we were able to carve out a semblance of a movie suite that still invokes plenty of emotion. With a timing of 20:31 we are left with a short yet concise feeling of longing emptiness; which was nothing like the previous G.O.T. suites brought to us. Man Of Steel Suite
Music by Hans Zimmer

We have a recent movie suite from the 2013 blockbuster about Superman. Phew! There is no doubt that Mr. Zimmer put his heart and soul into this music. It is dripping with themes that paint a landscape of other worldly places and fantastic times. His usage of drum orchestras and percussion that he has combined with a myriad of synthesizer as well as even some orchestral flourishes bring us into his world, if only for a short time. This movie suite is the State-Of-The-Art for current composers. As the behemoths of the movie soundtrack business, such as John Williams, James Horner, John Scott and their compadres retire or simply fade away, we are left with the vision of Hans Zimmer. Let's embrace the new as we remember the old. With a timing of 24:57, it is safe to say that this music will give you enjoyment for many years to come.  -MJ

Spartacus The Movie Suites

Spartacus Movie Suite
Music by Alex North

These classic movie suites from 1960 start out with a flourish of horns before swirling into a mix of sustained chaos. Of course, the chaos is quite controlled as we follow along as one man challenges authority and the evils of slavery in ancient Rome. This motion picture has a running time of 197 minutes, that's right 3 hours 17 minutes, so the amount of orchestral themes and cues to sift through was daunting. What we ended up with are two suites, with the first suite ending with the intermission music, with a timing of 31:13 for Suite One and 27:26 for Suite Two. This is classic movie music at its best, so I hope you enjoy these.  -MJ

With a few nods to Alexander Courage (who wrote the original theme for the TV show), we are swept along at a fantastic pace that never lets up. Not too much percussion like some other composers of late, nor too much synthesizer, but a great mix of instruments to achieve the desired sound. With a timing of 23:49, it is over way too soon. In this recent movie suite from 2013, we have yet another composer picking up the reigns of the Iron Man franchise from John Debney. Noted for his work on the Expendables and Battle Los Angeles, Mr. Tyler brings us the tried and true formula for a modern fantasy motion picture: synth and drums! Lots and lots of percussion carries this music from beginning to end, so at first there seemed as if there would be no actual themes at all. After repeated listening, the drums seemed to back away and finally the themes were there to hear. The resulting movie suite is modern, pounding movie music that is quite fun to listen to. This suite is from 1966; an epic motion picture with a story about the first days of the American colonization of the exotic islands of Hawaii. The music is quite majestic, with themes that evoke images of towering volcanoes and lush jungles. Very difficult to get, Mr. Bernstein chose to keep the bombastic flourishes, yet the composition still has a light feel that we rarely hear in today's movie suites. Again, we have another movie suite by Mr. Williams that he composed in 1977 which is very different than his usual approach with themes and motifs for individuals. Sure we all are familiar with the 5 note motif that surfaces late in the suite, but much of this suite is designed to build up to the final conclusion and because of that, most of the score was, well, mood music. Sure it worked great, but as a composition in its own right, well we had to do some tweaking to satisfy. With a timing of only 18:06, this is over quickly. Red Dawn Movie Suite 1984

That there was a certainty of knowing that I would really like this movie suite from 1984 by one of my favorite composers, Basil Poledouris, before I even began working on it, is amazing. After all, everything he wrote was not perfect, but it had been over twenty years since I listened to this music, so I wondered if it would even hold up after all this time. Well, the main theme is unmistakable, the slow portions are not too sweetly done and the early use of synthesizer mixed among the orchestral cues is quite endearing. I do not expect that you'll be disappointed by this, so as always,  I hope you enjoy.  -MJ
