The Man In The Iron Mask Movie Suite

Man In The Iron Mask Movie Suite
Music by Nick Glennie-Smith

This 1998 movie suite seems to cover the really important parts of a modern composition. With background male choral voices blending with the synthesizer, the other instruments are minimal until the final minutes when the orchestra sounds as if it belongs at a Royal event. Under the tutelage of Hans Zimmer, Mr. Glennie-Smith has certainly joined the ranks of the current synth-composers with this thrilling suite. With a timing of 22:47 this is one of those that you'll enjoy more and more each time you listen.  -MJ

Raintree County Movie Suite

Raintree County Movie Suite
Music by Johnny Green

In this classic movie suite from 1957, we are treated to a plethora of lush strings and well orchestrated cues. This is our first movie suite by Johnny Green, a studio composer that penned many scores throughout the 40's and 50's, although he is best represented by this suite that reminds many of Gone With The Wind. With a timing of 25:15 this music, I expect you'll be glad you listened. At the least, I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

Hunger Games Movie Suite

Hunger Games The Movie Suite
Music by James Newton-Howard

In this 2012 blockbuster, we are treated to a different kind of sound from Mr. Newton-Howard than we may be accustomed to. Many small cues, multi-faceted in permutations, rarely echo the main theme as they meander along while the synthesizer takes the lead here with a distant orchestral accompaniment. Solo instruments such as banjo, flute, guitar or violin also figure in the forefront, more often to introduce a feeling before joined by the other instruments. This suite is filled with a melancholy longing that takes the listener away before delivering a fitting conclusion. With a timing of 22:05, this is what soundtracks are aspiring to (good or bad) and still worth a listen. As always, I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

The Dark Crystal Movie Suite

Dark Crystal, The Movie Suite
Music by Trevor Jones

This 1982 fantasy movie suite comes to us from the pen of Trevor Jones. This landmark motion picture remains a cult classic, much in part to this music which has the ability to transport the listener to another time and place that may exist somewhere. Using a smattering of synthesizer, the orchestra delivers this suite with stylistic aplomb. With a timing of 20:04 this was taken from the 25th anniversary CD which has a smoothness that must be heard. I really hope you enjoy.  -MJ

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey Movie Suite

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey Movie Suite
Music by Howard Shore

Phew, when they asked Mr. Shore to compose the music for this 2012 prequel to the Lord of The Rings (LOTR) he went back to his previous work; borrowed here and there while he wrote an abundance of new motifs, themes and cues. If you enjoyed the LOTR movie suites, then these will not disappoint you. Starting with two and one half hours, we have honed this down to the bare minimum, yet there is still so much to share here that I went the multiple suite route so as not to hinder the vision. Part A covers from the beginning until the group escapes into Rivendell and has a timing of 22:13. Part B covers the welcome by the Elves of Rivendell until the group is saved by the eagles and has a timing of 21:52. As always, I hope you enjoy these suites.  -MJ

Red Dawn Movie Suite 1984

Red Dawn Movie Suite 1984
Music by Basil Poledouris

That there was a certainty of knowing that I would really like this movie suite from 1984 by one of my favorite composers, Basil Poledouris, before I even began working on it, is amazing. After all, everything he wrote was not perfect, but it had been over twenty years since I listened to this music, so I wondered if it would even hold up after all this time. Well, the main theme is unmistakable, the slow portions are not too sweetly done and the early use of synthesizer mixed among the orchestral cues is quite endearing. I do not expect that you'll be disappointed by this, so as always,  I hope you enjoy.  -MJ
