The Right Stuff Movie Suite

Right Stuff, The Movie Suite
Music by Bill Conti

At the outset, I must say that this movie suite is an exciting work of movie art. With a turbulent feeling of heroism and patriotic national pride, Mr.Conti has given us a tour-de-force production that stands amazingly on its own. If it comes off a little over the top, we must forgive the composer, after all the accompanying motion picture was about the early pioneers of the space race. With a timing of 30:54, please excuse the less than perfect sound since the transfer was made from a pristine LP (yes, vinyl). Hopefully someday there will be new digital version, but until then I still hope you enjoy what we have.  –MJ

Rise of The Guardians Movie Suite

Rise of The Guardians Suite
Music by Alexandre Desplat

This recent movie suite from a 2012 animated adventure takes us on a turbulent journey into the realm of fantasy.  With only a tiny use of synthesizers to fill out the orchestra, we can hear elements from past suites by Mr. Desplat such as Harry Potter, but he continues to hone his craft to excite the listener with majestic sound. The main theme is repeated enough to connect the various cues, but so many are almost snippets that give a feeling of frequently stopping and starting. Could be a personal problem? With a timing of 23:11, you will want to make space for this in your library, to be enjoyed time after time.  -MJ

Eragon Movie Suite

Eragon Movie Suite
Music by Patrick Doyle

Although there will be no sequel to this 2006 fantasy motion picture, we can at least enjoy Mr. Doyle's movie suite in all of its splendor. With a regal flourish that barely lets up for the listener to catch their breath, we are lifted on the wings of a majestic main theme that runs throughout the length of the suite, with enough different flourishes that keep it interesting. With a timing of 26:32, I think you'll really enjoy this one.  -MJ

Basic Instinct Movie Suite

Basic Instinct Movie Suite
Music by Jerry Goldsmith

The movie suite for this 1992 thriller takes the listener on a topsy-turvy trip that is both edgy as well as surreal. Mr. Goldsmith crafted an eerie suite that reminds me of other film noir scores, yet this one seems to evoke a certain passion as soon as the main theme kicks in, meandering throughout the suite to the climactic finish. With a timing of 25:04, I hope you enjoy this one.  -MJ

The Man In The Iron Mask Movie Suite

Man In The Iron Mask Movie Suite
Music by Nick Glennie-Smith

This 1998 movie suite seems to cover the really important parts of a modern composition. With background male choral voices blending with the synthesizer, the other instruments are minimal until the final minutes when the orchestra sounds as if it belongs at a Royal event. Under the tutelage of Hans Zimmer, Mr. Glennie-Smith has certainly joined the ranks of the current synth-composers with this thrilling suite. With a timing of 22:47 this is one of those that you'll enjoy more and more each time you listen.  -MJ
