Star Trek Into Darkness Movie Suite

Star Trek Into Darkness Movie Suite
Music by Michael Giacchino

In this recent 2013 movie suite, we are given another schooling by Mr. Giacchino on how to write some great music to accompany an action packed science fiction, motion picture. With a few nods to Alexander Courage (who wrote the original theme for the TV show), we are swept along at a fantastic pace that never lets up. Not too much percussion like some other composers of late, nor too much synthesizer, but a great mix of instruments to achieve the desired sound. With a timing of 23:49, it is over way too soon. Enjoy it while you can still get it.  -MJ

John Carter Movie Suite

John Carter Movie Suite
Music by Michael Giacchino

This action-adventure (or is it a sci-fi adventure?) movie suite is filled with all the makings of another success for Mr. Giacchino. The Academy Award winning composer has pulled out all the stops with a huge orchestra, a smattering of choral voices, as well as the occasional synthesizer. The main theme doesn't even start until after the first 5 minutes, but once underway the music reminds me of Horner with the oohs and ahs, Broughton with the swirling strings and even Giacchino's Star Trek, but don't get me wrong, he has crafted a new and vivid soundscape that translated well into a movie suite. With a timing of 29:42 this is great enjoyment. When can we expect a sequel?? -MJ

Super 8 Movie Suite

Super 8 Suite
Music by Micael Giacchino

We have a recent blockbuster with a catchy main theme that you just can't stop humming.  Add to that the foreboding cues that accompany any mysterious Alien to the screen and we have a movie suite that is newly exciting yet sounds like a throwback to the 80's.  Mr. Giacchino has become one prolific composer in the last couple of years.  With an Oscar nod for his score in Up, to his latest rendition of the Star Trek franchise, he has shown his chops over and over again. Some say he has borrowed ideas from previous composers for the Super 8 score from the likes of John Williams, Grame Revell and others, but that may be jealousy talking because the final product is entertaining, energetic as well as enlightening.  What more could anyone ask of a movie suite?  With a timing of  33:46, it seems much quicker than it is and as always, I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

Mission Impossible The Trilogy Movie Suite

Mission Impossible Trilogy Suite
Music by Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer
and Michael Giacchino

Okay, this breaks from the norm, but after all it's Mission Impossible and I did not want to have (3) very short suites of 7-8 minutes each, so I merged the edited music into one suite with a timing of 25:45, which is just about right. As for the music, each of the three composers went at this with very different approaches, but when you hear the finished product, you'll probably wonder, because they each embraced the original TV theme, before spinning off into their own worlds of sound.  So, what we end up with is an interesting mix that is fun, lively and certainly enjoyable from start to finish.  At least I hope you enjoy.  Until next time... MJ.

Star Trek 2009 Movie Suite

Star Trek 2009 Suite
Music by Michael Giacchino

With the re-resurection of the Star Trek franchise firmly in hand, we find Mr. Giacchino penning the excellent score. Taking a single theme and offering it up in multiple guises, we are often reminded of the fact that this is Star Trek as we hear the familiar original theme intertwined with the new theme to give a complete performance that is certainly not lacking. This movie suite has a timing of just 24:16. Others have taken it upon themselves to edit the earlier Star Trek movie scores into suites, but this is the first one that I have involved myself with. Maybe in a parallel dimension when my alter ego can garner enough mojo, somewhere in the near future, I'll tackle that beast when I have the extra time, but for now I hope you enjoy this movie suite! -MJ
