The Ghost and Mrs. Muir Movie Suite

Ghost & Mrs. Muir, The Suite
Music by Bernard Herrmann

This classic movie suite hails from 1947, a time of great hope and promise. Praised as his most symphonic work to date, Mr. Herrmann confessed that this was his favorite work of all time. Constructed from a multitude of cues such as Pastoral and Nocturne, I was skeptical at first, but this composition builds ever so slightly as it progresses through the stages and as with so many other suites, it really grew on me. No, this is not bombastic, nor is it spectacular, but it is melodic and filled with emotion. With a timing of 22:36, I hope you enjoy this classic work of one of the great motion picture composers.  -MJ

North By Northwest Movie Suite

North By Northwest Movie Suite
Music by Bernard Herrmann

This classic movie suite from the 1959 Hitchcock thriller is filled with tightly wound themes that were crafted by Mr. Herrmann in the his most prolific heyday. Whether signifying death defying leaps, chase scenes or the moments of two lovers, this suite is filled with chops and props. In a word, amazing. With a timing of 22 minutes, I must apologize for the small amounts of hiss that crop up in the quieter phrases, but this is still the best sound available for this music. I hope you enjoy!!  -MJ

Taxi Driver Movie Suite

Taxi Driver Movie Suite
Music by Bernard Herrmann

Keeping within our theme of gangster-crime suites, in this 1975 crime drama, we are given a movie suite that was Mr. Herrmann's very last gift to the world of motion picture music. Although this is mostly jazz with a light touch of orchestral support, we are nonetheless drawn into the gritty world of early 70's New York in all its squaller. This music grows on you, with the light main theme and the tightness of other cues merging into a short burst of musical genius. With a timing of 18:35 this is certainly worth a listen. Enjoy.  -MJ

The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad Movie Suite

7th Voyage of Sinbad, The Suite
Music by Bernard Herrmann

This is the first movie suite to be shared by Bernard Herrmann. When this movie spectacle was released in 1958, fans flocked to see the siblimely strange creatures and magic of Ray Harryhausen, the special effects wizard.  What they also heard is now considered one of the masterworks of composer Bernard Herrmann from his lengthy career.  Best known for his extensive work with Alfred Hitchcock, Mr. Herrman, was the film-noire composer extraordinaire, but for this score, he went all-out for adventure and highly dramatic cues. A slightly eastern sounding orchestra explodes with horns and percussion with an arabic flourish as the movie suite opens, dragging us into the mix while we experience the musical story of Sinbad.  There are some slow moments when your mind wanders before the final notes sweep us to the powerful conclusion.  With a timing of 18:54, this frantic work feels like it's only a few minutes long, but if you've never heard this before, I think you'll really enjoy it.  -MJ
