Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 1

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 1
Music by John Williams

In a singular moment, it became apparent that although there are numerous H.P. compilations floating around out there on the cloud, it occurred to me that there was nothing that brought the score highlights of H.P. from beginning to end. This then is a tribute to all of the Harry Potter Scores as well as the motion pictures that will be enjoyed for many, many years to come. Presented here is the Harry Potter Symphony with a total timing of 1:39:58. True it is not actually a movie suite, but it is close enough to share! I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

In the first movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: Sorcerers and Chambers, with the music composed by Mr. Williams. He introduced us to the simple yet effective Hedwig's Theme that you will hear throughout all of the movements so it is fitting that we begin at the beginning. With a timing of 28:16 this whirls us into the Wizarding World quite nicely, thank you.

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 2

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 2
Music by Patrick Doyle and John Williams

In the second movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: Prisoner and Goblet, which starts with the continued scoring by Mr. Williams and ends with Mr. Doyles' excellent phrasing. Harry and his friends are growing up and the themes presented here do a wonderful job of representing that. Sure, there are many moments of lightness and discovery, but there is also the foreboding sense of evil around every corner. With a timing of 27:25, I am sure you will enjoy this.  -MJ

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 3

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 3
Music by Nicholas Hooper

In the third movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: Phoenix and the Prince with scoring by Mr. Hooper who brings a new turn of themes to the tale of Harry Potter. With vintage sound of horns, pipes as well as full orchestra, Mr. Hooper brings us into the story beginning with celebratory cues that soon turn darkly serious. Harry's life changes as he learns more about the Wizarding World, more about his mortal enemies and how this music draws us into the center of the tale. With a timing of 22:07, this is over before you realize it. Enjoy while you can.  -MJ

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 4

Harry Potter Symphony - Movement # 4
Music by Alexandre Desplat

In this the fourth movement of the HPS (Harry Potter Symphony) we have entitled: The Deathly Hollows, with scoring by Mr. Desplat who finishes the Symphony with a twisting, turning, flash of brilliance. The music fills one with dread and hope as we are taken into the final throes of good vs. evil, which is a fitting conclusion to our journey with Harry and the Wizarding World. With a timing of 22:10 it is my hope that you enjoyed your listening journey, too. -MJ

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Movie Suite, Part 2

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Suite, Part 2
Music by Alexandre Desplat

Here it is!  The final installment for the Harry Potter franchise.  Utilizing some of the familiar motifs and themes from earlier versions with plenty of new cues, we are presented with a relentless movie suite of power and conflict.  Mr. Desplat does not disappoint as he takes us on a journey that eventually brings the conclusion of good versus evil into the listeners ears and head.  I found that after multiple sessions, this really grows on you in so many ways.  Whether or not you are an H.P. fan, you should give this a listen.  With a timing of 32:06, I think you'll enjoy this one.  -MJ

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Movie Suite, Part 1

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Suite Part 1
Music by Alexandre Desplat

When it was announced that Alexandre Desplat had been chosen to orchestrate the latest Harry Potter franchise, it was very disappointing news. Simply put, most of his other motion picture scores are barely listenable mood music, so due to that, his other scores have not become movie suites.  Believe me, although Mr. Desplat is an excellent music technician, his minimalistic approach at creating the "mood" has never transferred well into a compositional movie suite. Recently while attending this motion picture, it was apparant that much of the time, there was simply no music for many of the scenes; in other words long moments of sustained silence! It seemed destiny that this might be the first Harry Potter film without a movie suite to match. Ah, but now that the soundtrack has been released, and the score has been massaged, we have found a movie suite that may be the best of all the Harry Potter suites. Really!  So sorry Mr. Williams.  So sorry Mr. Doyle.  And so very sorry, Mr. Hooper. With a timing of 31:49, I do believe that you'll enjoy this one.  -MJ

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Movie Suite

Harry Potter 6 And The Half Blood Prince
Music by Nicholas Hooper

Taken from the recent blockbuster, this movie suite represents just what we're getting in motion picture scoring today. Mr. Hooper builds on the sounds and the distinctive feel that he has given us before. This is really dark stuff. Eerie. Creepy. Scary. All come to mind, yet in the end, it just get's us prepped for the last chapters yet to come. We can hardly wait for next year. Hope you enjoy. Next post, I will bring out a classic recently rediscovered by yours truly. -MJ

Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix Suite

Harry Potter 5 And The Order of The Phoenix
Music by Nicholas Hooper

As the intensity of the story of Harry Potter increases, so too does the complexity of the score and movie suite that accompanies each episode. Mr. Hooper, an award winning composer from the British Isles has brought a refreshingly complex symphonic reading to this motion picture score. There is only a momentary recall of the original John Williams theme, but all the rest is new as it thrusts us into the action. If you like this, you'll really like the next episode, also scored by Mr. Hooper. Until next time, enjoy the music. -MJ

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Suite

Harry Potter 4 and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Music by John Williams

Returning to Harry Potter for the fourth episode, we find that once again this score was penned by John Williams. Using his excellent abilities to take us on a trip to another time and place, while putting us in the middle of the action. The music is darkly foreboding always promising sinister events that will manifest just around the next corner. Many of the themes in this movie suite are familiar, and the hope is that you will want more, rather than less when the 15 minutes have played out. Enjoy. -MJ

Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire Suite

Harry Potter 3 And The Goblet of Fire
Music by Patrick Doyle

As the characters in the Harry Potter saga grow up, so to does the music that surrounds their exploits. Using some of the themes written by John Williams, our composer has built on the foundation remarkably well. This music weaves into the fabric of this episode perfectly and carries us deeper into the fantasy world of Hogwarts, Dumbledore and of course Harry and his friends. The composer sits precariously on the razor blade between darkness and the light delivering an excellent movie suite.

The timing for this ticks in at 37 minutes, the longest of all the episodes. Enjoy. -MJ

Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets Suite

Harry Potter 2 And Chamber of Secrets
Music by John Williams

For his second Harry Potter score, John Williams builds new and interesting layers on top of his earlier work for the first Harry Potter episode. The well received Hedwig Theme is here as well as other less known but familiar themes. There is a strong sense of darkness pervading the aural atmosphere yet the composer rises above that to deliver a fun, likeable movie suite that pulses with a lifelike quality of its own.

The timing on this is a bit over 27 minutes. As you may have wondered, my owl, Mac, has returned from the infirmary and is in top form. Watch for my coming Posts. Enjoy! -MJ

Harry Potter & The Socerers Stone Suite

Harry Potter 1 And The Sorcerers Stone Suite
Music by John Williams

Ah yes, another wonderful movie suite by the extremely talented John Williams. The music is haunting, yet magically inviting to the ear as it takes us to the fantastic world of Harry Potter. You could not have asked for a better start for this series of movies. Certainly, once you listen to this, you'll be demanding for the rest of these movie suites. All in good time, since my owl, Mac, has a sore wing and my posts may or may not be affected. Enjoy. -MJ
