Total Recall 2012 Movie Suite

Total Recall 2012 Movie Suite
Music by Harry Gregson-Williams

This 2012 remake shares much with the original motion picture; plenty of action, futuristic landscapes and a thrilling storyline. As for the music, well, this is a synth-fest from start to finish, with very little orchestral cues or themes to hear. We are barraged by the pumping synthesizer and it seems as if it is rushing to the final note as quickly as possible. Oh well, that's what we are getting lately from many of the composers and Mr. Gregson-Williams probably did not want to be left out. If you really want to know, this is as good as what we get from Zimmer or Joblonsky with only a few twists or turns along the way. With a timing at 28:46, if you like synthesizer music, then you should enjoy this, but Goldsmith this is not!  -MJ

Cowboys And Aliens Movie Suite

Cowboys & Aliens Movie Suite
Music by Harry Gregson-Williams

This recent 2012 Sci-Fi Western movie suite starts off with a lone guitar that merges into a fiddle and becomes a catchy main theme reminiscent of Morricone that is quickly joined by other traditional western instruments. Next we whirl off into an action-packed orchestral sound that reminds us of Zimmer as we are taken into an eerie, yet powerful world of sound. Together, this metamorphisis rushes us into the unknown. Maybe this should not really work, but it does. With a timing of 24:37, I hope you enjoy the rush!  -MJ

The Chronicles of Narnia 1 - The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe Movie Suite

The Chronicles of Narnia
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Music by Harry Gregson-Williams

With aplomb we are discussing the movie suite from the first of the Chronicles of Narnia motion pictures, composed by Harry Gregson-Williams, best known for his other fine work on the Shrek movies and Kingdom of Heaven.  Right from the outset, we are filled with an ominous feel; yet with a deft lightness the music does not falter as the main theme is presented and re-worked throughout.  There is a little choral section near the middle of the piece that reminds us of the battle between good and evil before we rush on to the conclusion. We end with the main theme, quietly questioning whether any of this ever really happened. With a timing of 26:01, this movie suite is a great introduction to the Narnia legacy. Hope you enjoy.  -MJ

Chronicles of Narnia 2 - Prince Caspian

The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian
Music by Harry Gregson-Williams

The second installment of the Chronicles of Narnia has Mr. Gregson-Williams again penning the music for our enjoyment. Building quickly, right from the openning notes this movie suite is regal and powerful. Sprinkling in numerous themes and with some added choral motifs to strengthen the impact of the sound, we can hear that this music could be used for some imaginary royal event. The themes are reminiscent of the first movie suite, yet they are more in-your-face.  With a timing of 28:08 this should get you going. Enjoy!  -MJ

Kingdom Of Heaven Movie Suite

Kingdom Of Heaven Suite I & II
Music by Harry Gregson-Williams

If you've seen this movie, you can understand that it seems to have numerous endings, so when one takes that into consideration, it certainly helps explain the fact that there is a vast amount of music contained in the score to be listened to and manipulated to come up with a much shorter movie suite.  Unfortunately, this score is a wonderful listening experience and coming up with just 15 or 20 minutes was difficult.  What we ended up with are actually two movie suites with a timing of 28 minutes and 30 minutes respectively.  Certainly these could be merged into one very long movie suite, but they stand up pretty well on their own, so I present them to you to enjoy and do with what you will.  -MJ
