Quo Vadis Movie Suite

Quo Vadis Movie Suite
Music by Miklos Rozsa

This classic 1951 movie suite relates the tale of a motion picture about the evil Roman Dictator Nero who watched while Rome burned.  Mr. Rozsa utilized a mixed choral, orchestral beginning that pins you back before slowly building into an intense tour de force at the mid section of the suite. The pace begins to cut back until we slowly hear the subdued climax. Never had I heard this before, but to discover something new and with some teeth, is always a treat. With a timing of 22:22, I hope you enjoy this.  -MJ

Snow White and the Huntsman Movie Suite

Snow White and the Huntsman Movie Suite
Music by James Newton Howard

In this new movie suite from the recent 2012 motion picture release, Mr. Howard has given us a much needed discourse on the latest way to compose for a semi-scary version of the children's much loved fable of Snow White. Taken as a movie suite, this music resembles a tone poem. The opening French horn cascades through an orchestra into a single piano before the strings warp the orchestra into full speed. There is the intro, the escape, the hunted, the magical interlude, the tides of war and the conclusion neatly wrapped up in a bow. Those are my interpretations. I cannot say much about the picture, but this movie suite is an excellent way to spend one's listening. With a timing of 26:31, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. -MJ

Prometheus Movie Suite

Prometheus Movie Suite
Music by Marc Streitenfeld

On the wings of an unprecedented opening, this current 2012 movie suite was composed by Mr. Streitenfeld, a very busy man from the look of his latest movie credits. This score was filled with eerie sounds and drastic effects as part of its fabric. After tearing away those extraneous sounds, we are left with a haunting soundscape filled with hopeful syntheziser, subtle voices and muted orchestral cues that make you stop what you're doing to listen. To say that there are moments when this reminds me of Goldsmith and the first Alien movie suite, would be true, but more because of the actual feel of the sound and not from the actual musical notes. With a timing of 18:32, I hope you enjoy this in a lonely, dark room for maximum effect.  -MJ

The Sea Hawk Movie Suite

The Sea Hawk Movie Suite
Music by Erich Korngold

This 1940 follow-up to Captain Blood takes us on another swashbuckling journey to the high seas. Mr. Korngold continued to hone his craft, as he penned another action-adventure movie suite for his followers to consume. We like the simplistic main theme, the horns blaring until the strings take us on the ocean winds before we visit with the love theme that is quickly followed up by the final duel to the death. With a timing of 14:40, this is over quickly, but I hope it will be enjoyable!  -MJ

Captain Blood Movie Suite

Captain Blood Suite
Music by Erich Korngold

The main theme to this 1935 movie suite used to be a well-known staple on the concert scene for many Philharmonic's, but with so many other recent movie themes, it has fallen away with the sounds of the past. Mr. Korngold was one of the fathers of the movie suite as we now know it, so it seems fitting that when you listen to this masterwork that it sounds so similar to many others that have come since; Goldsmith, Horner, Williams, and even Poledorus. Of course, we must remember, Mr. Korngold came first, all those others took what he began to mature the art of movie music. The swashbuckling action themes and swirling strings of the love themes intermesh as we are drawn into the world of Captain Blood, if only for a brief timing of 12:26. Add this one to your library and enjoy for many years to come.  -MJ

PS- The source CD for this came from an ancient analog source digitally remastered in stereo. Until I find something better, I hope this will do for now.  -MJ

Brave Movie Suite

Brave Movie Suite
Music by Patrick Doyle

This recent animated Fantasy motion picture enchants us with a movie suite that hails from the Scottish Highlands. Rich with local fiddle, drums and pipes, Mr. Doyle has taken the best of the Scots cultural music and merged it with a sumptous sounding orchestral accompaniment that has to be heard to be appreciated. Yes, this is from the latest of the famous Disney "Princess" marketing machines, but this movie suite rises above the superfluos and delivers a surprising punch. I know I was surprised!  With a timing of 21:41, you cannot help but enjoy this one.  -MJ
