John Carter Movie Suite

John Carter Movie Suite
Music by Michael Giacchino

This action-adventure (or is it a sci-fi adventure?) movie suite is filled with all the makings of another success for Mr. Giacchino. The Academy Award winning composer has pulled out all the stops with a huge orchestra, a smattering of choral voices, as well as the occasional synthesizer. The main theme doesn't even start until after the first 5 minutes, but once underway the music reminds me of Horner with the oohs and ahs, Broughton with the swirling strings and even Giacchino's Star Trek, but don't get me wrong, he has crafted a new and vivid soundscape that translated well into a movie suite. With a timing of 29:42 this is great enjoyment. When can we expect a sequel?? -MJ

Air Force One Movie Suite

Air Force One Suite
Music by Jerry Goldsmith

Without tipping the scales in one direction or another, Mr. Goldsmith penned a fantastic main theme for this 1997 movie suite that is a heroic fanfare, with horns a-blazing at the front of the orchestra while we tensely look over our shoulder for another bad-guy. Fortunately, he weaves this theme in and out in so many ways that even by the end, we are still hoping to hear it one more time.  With a timing of 23:54 this will raise your hopes for enjoyment.  -MJ

310 To Yuma Movie Suite

3:10 To Yuma Movie Suite
Music by Marco Beltrami

This 2011 Western movie suite comes to us from Mr. Beltrami, a composer known for his minimalistic approach to scoring a motion picture. Using what sounds like the work of Ennio Moricone, he has crafted a foreboding movie suite that uses acoustic and electric guitars as well as fiddles to immerse the listener into a work that soon swells with orchestral flair to accentuate the simple yet effective instruments of the west. With a timing of 18:26, hats off to the composer, for this is one of his best. Enjoy!  -MJ

A Fistful Of Dollars Movie Suite

A Fistful of Dollars Movie Suite
Music by Ennio Morricone

In this 1964 follow-up to the Western, The Good The Bad The Ugly, Mr. Morricone decided to to try some unusual instruments in this order: whistle, whip, guitar, voices, multiple guitars, strings, trumpet, snare drums and a clarinet before settling into the rest of the movie suite. Although there is little to no actual orchestral music here, I include this movie suite more as an amusement, because it feels like the old west, or at the least it feels like a Spaghetti Western. Of course, with a timing of 13:29, it is all over very quickly. Enjoy if you can.  -MJ

The Big Country Movie Suite

The Big Country Movie Suite
Music by Jerome Moross

This 1958 Western movie suite starts with swirling strings that paint a picture of the expansive west as the rest of the orchestra joins in to give us a legendary main theme that is another one of the very best rated of all time. You have probably heard this music before, but if not, you should give this movie suite a listen. With a timing of 25:12, I hope you enjoy.  -MJ

Cowboys And Aliens Movie Suite

Cowboys & Aliens Movie Suite
Music by Harry Gregson-Williams

This recent 2012 Sci-Fi Western movie suite starts off with a lone guitar that merges into a fiddle and becomes a catchy main theme reminiscent of Morricone that is quickly joined by other traditional western instruments. Next we whirl off into an action-packed orchestral sound that reminds us of Zimmer as we are taken into an eerie, yet powerful world of sound. Together, this metamorphisis rushes us into the unknown. Maybe this should not really work, but it does. With a timing of 24:37, I hope you enjoy the rush!  -MJ

How The West Was Won Movie Suite

How The West Was Won Suite
Music by Alfred Newman

When this music was released in 1962 it received aclaim for its unwavering breadth and wide scope. It quickly became regarded as one of the best, if not the best Western scores at that time and still holds up very well after all these years. Even though there was plenty of hours of music to sift through, the resulting movie suite feels like a complete composition, even if it is a bit repetitious at times, as the main theme meanders in and out of the listener's conciousness. I remember how impressed I felt when I saw this movie for the first time as a small boy in the 60's and it's a certainty that the music is responsible for that impression. With a timing of 31:30, you will want to add this to your collection. Enjoy!  -MJ

Lonesome Dove Movie Suite

Lonesome Dove Suite
Music by Basil Poledouris

Our next Western movie suite comes from the beloved mini-series that broke so many hearts and records when it aired in 1989. The beautiful music that accompanied this tour-de-force was penned by one of our favorite composers, Mr. Poledouris, and he did not hold back either. It was said that he studied many of the great Western scores to come up with what he called orchestral folk songs. It works beautifully! From the first notes, you know that you are listening to a western and although most of this movie suite is subdued, its grandeur is unmistakable. With a timing of 25:53, I believe you'll enjoy this one for certain.  -MJ

Red River Movie Suite

Red River Movie Suite
Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

This classic Western movie suite comes to us from 1948, a time of sweeping strings and sentimental horn sections. Although the main theme does not kick in until after a third of the music has passed, we then hear it often enough to not forget. This has been considered by many to be the best Western movie suites ever. I cannot say, but since Mr. Tiomkin did many western motion picture scores, this is a good representation of what he was capable of accomplishing during his long career in Hollywood. With a timing of 19:29 we still have many other western movie suites on tap. Hope you enjoy.  -MJ

Return Of The Magnificent Seven Movie Suite

Return Of The Magnificent Seven Suite
Music by Elmer Bernstein

Without actually writing much new music for this movie suite from 1966, Mr. Berstein re-worked his original score from The Magnificent Seven to come up with what is agruably the better of the two. We are rocked by the original motif but quickly move into other emotionally charged cues that lightly utilize the original while breaking new ground. This is probably what Bernstein wanted to acheive from the outset, but of course, we'll never really know. With a timing of 22:10, compare this to the original and see which one you enjoy more. Oh yeah, here is the first movie suite: http://moviesuites.blogspot.com/search/label/Magnificent%20Seven  -MJ

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Suite

The Good The Bad The Ugly The Suite
Music by Ennio Morricone

This is the first movie suite we are presenting by the revered Ennio Morricone which just happens to be a western! Considered a movie score genius, he can evoke so much emotion from a single instrument whether it be a trumpet, guitar, voice or any other. His style is minimalistic, yet he can still orchestrate the strings and brass in ways other composers can only mimic. This movie suite starts off with a classic whistle, voice, following up with an electric guitar, each echoing the starkness of the old west in striking motif that is legendary. Make certain you listen to this whole movie suite because it will grab you! With a timing of 22:16, I hope you enjoy this classic.  -MJ

Tombstone Movie Suite

Tombstone Movie Suite
Music by Bruce Broughton

An old piano segways into the pulsing march of drums and horns that show us how brutal the old west was before we are taken in by the freedom and majesty that the open west must have felt like to Wyatt Earp and his family. In this 1993 movie suite, Mr. Broughton takes us on a journey of good versus evil, often returning back to a new variation of that pulsing march that feels like we are galloping on horseback ourselves, before sweeping in with the strings to remind us that even in the old west, love played a pivitol role in what happened to those that survived. With a timing of 30:33 this is a classic. Sure hope y'all enjoy!  You also may want to give a listen to the other western movie suite by Mr. Broughton, Silverado, located here: http://moviesuites.blogspot.com/2010/08/silverado-movie-suite.html  -MJ

Wyatt Earp Movie Suite

Wyatt Earp Movie Suite
Music by James Newton Howard

During the month of March, 2012, we are experiencing the Western's here at Movie Suites. It is befitting that we bring you this 1994 movie suite that reminds us nostalgically of the trials and tribulations of the western expansion as experienced by one notable Law-Man. The orchestra is joined by bagpipes as the strings whisper into the expansive prairies before moving west where the horns and drums rise to meet the majesty of the mountains. Yes, Mr. Newton-Howard shows his chops in this suite that starts with a strong theme that is occasionally revisited, but rarely repeated. As a compostion this music just works like a tone poem or wait for it, symphonic suite? With a timing of 24:58, this is one to enjoy over and over again.  -MJ
