7th Voyage of Sinbad, The Suite
Music by Bernard Herrmann
This is the first movie suite to be shared by Bernard Herrmann. When this movie spectacle was released in 1958, fans flocked to see the siblimely strange creatures and magic of Ray Harryhausen, the special effects wizard. What they also heard is now considered one of the masterworks of composer Bernard Herrmann from his lengthy career. Best known for his extensive work with Alfred Hitchcock, Mr. Herrman, was the film-noire composer extraordinaire, but for this score, he went all-out for adventure and highly dramatic cues. A slightly eastern sounding orchestra explodes with horns and percussion with an arabic flourish as the movie suite opens, dragging us into the mix while we experience the musical story of Sinbad. There are some slow moments when your mind wanders before the final notes sweep us to the powerful conclusion. With a timing of 18:54, this frantic work feels like it's only a few minutes long, but if you've never heard this before, I think you'll really enjoy it. -MJ
