Although this classic movie score hails from 1959, the themes are timelessly etched into the framework of movie soundtrack history. Considered by many experts as the very best movie music ever to accompany a motion picture, these suites have so much to be discovered. Of course, we will not debate the merits of either suite, other than to say if you are un-familiar with these famous themes, then this is the best way to listen. Hours and hours of music has been carefully crafted into two orchestral compositions with Part 1 relating the early years of Ben Hur filled with introductions and ending on a slave galley, with a timing of 22:41. Part 2 brings us the second life of Ben Hur as a Roman, with the triumpant march into Rome, the chariot races with the endless fan fares and concluding with the miracle, with a timing of 23:27. Recently this current Academy Award nominated music shows Mr. Williams again at his best while he evokes dramatic vision through his batton. This movie suite starts off slow, then builds as it takes some getting used to, but as it develops, all of the forms, the cues and themes presented seem to meld together into a seamless composition both with highs, lows and that "je ne sais quoi" that is so hard for composers to get. This science fiction thriller may or may not be prophetic about the end of 2012, but the music is all about quick crescendo's and short cues to take you on a bumpy ride toward the finale. Along the way we are treated to persuasive percussion, singular strings as well as multiple endings. Connecting all this into a cohesive compostition was difficult because there seems to be no main themes to act as the glue, so in the end were left with some loosely knit cues that signify the end of mankind as we know it. This classic award winner from 1965 has the sound of olde Russia with the strings of a singing balalaika that merges into the orchestral cues. The main theme of this suite meanders in and out as it starts and stops many times. Okay, it is a bit repetitious, but you can't help but forgive Mr. Jarre since he was composing his score in the accepted fashion of the day. If you have never heard this, give it a listen. Taking this award winning score and converting it into a movie suite has proved to be both difficult and oh so much fun. Mr. Horner utilized synthisizers peppered with choral voices as well as haunting Celtic pipes to evoke the majesty of his masterpiece, keeping the orchestra in the background unless it was required for dramatic effect. Add to the fact that the daunting amount of music composed for this epic spans many hours of content, you can imagine the creative genius we were faced with here. Still, nothing worth doing is going to be easy, so what we end up with is a rather large movie suite with a current timing of 35:48 that is mostly orchestral in nature, yet still has plenty of choral voices and synthetic cues that were necessary to complete the fluidity of the composition. This is one suite that needs to be listened to and enjoyed. -MJ

This movie suite has very little orchestral music content, instead the listener is barraged by electric guitars, various electronic synthesizer sound and plenty of thunderous percussion. If you like the sound of this, then you'll be pleasantly surprised and you should enjoy this suite. On the other hand, if your tastes fall far from this tree, you may still want to sample this because it may be where movie scores could be heading in the future. With the prolific use of electronic instruments, choral mixes, raging electric guitars and a spattering of orchestral cues, we have a movie suite that sounds like so many of the other recent scores of late. So if you think this sounds a bit like Hans Zimmer scored this, you would not be surprised to hear that he did produce this for Mr. Debney, which conveniently explains the similarities. Still, after stripping away much of the fluff, we have an interesting suite that carries on the feel of the first Iron Man Suite while taking on all comers. If you listen carefully, you may even hear some Poledouris moments with the use of building percussion and hotly played strings. Since it is a new year, with a timing of 18:48, I hope you enjoy this. -MJ

The long awaited sequal to Tron had to have a score that was both electronic and ground breaking, just as the original film score was. With an army of synthesizers we have a movie suite that melts the walls between orchestra and electronic sound. Each cue builds on the previous as we travel the arteries of musical roads often attempted, but rarely realized. If you can not stand synthesizer music, you may want to pass on this suite, but...since so many composers are utilizing electronic music these days, those lines become ever so blurry. Can you say Zimmer or Jablonsky? This is a monumental work that should be listened to and shared. With a timing of 31:45 you should enjoy this one. -MJ

The fanfare that opens the suite is the backbone that all the other cues are built upon, yet this is a connected composition with all the qualities one would expect from a symphony or tone-poem. Although this movie suite is from 1962, it brings a well connected composition to the party that is both timeless and thoroughly enjoyable. Once you listen to this, it is virtually impossible to get the "Riding Theme" out of your head, yet my research tells me that this movie was a dramatic love story first, action flick second. Well, if the music is any indication, the historians may have it reversed. Flowing from the opening notes, there are many tender moments, but they tend to bridge the action together cohesively. Nominated for an Academy Award for best score, the timing of this movie suite is at 28:36, not too long, nor to short, it falls in that sweet spot for listening. I hope you enjoy this classic. -MJ

Whoa. We have an isanely intense movie suite here that delivers a one-two punch as it marches straight into the unknown. Although Mr. Silvestri delivers tension, he utilizes his tried and true formula of brass and percussion with a light mix of strings. Okay, at times this is all too familiar (can you say Back To The Future?) but it's perfect for the movie and the suite is great to listen to as you drive. Although there are some tense moments in this music, there is a feeling that this is going somewhere whether you listen or not. Almost an attitude. Most of this movie suite was penned by Mr. Mancini, yet from what I researched, Mr. Kamen also added some orchestrations, too. With a timing of 30:20 this rarely heard music is worth a good listen. What I like about this movie suite is that it is so minimalistic. Every nuance, every string pluck, every note has a purpose to convey the terror about to happen in the next moment. Many believe that this music is some of Mr. Goldsmith's very best. Nominated for an academy award, much of the score is filled with sound effects and tense mood music. Nominated for an Academy Award in 1987, this is considered by very many as one of Mr. Horner's premier works. Starting out very slowly, we feel the vast expanse of outer space, that nagging feeling of the unknown. Cautiously building at a snails pace we are drawn in, our nerves tightening as we listen. Finally after about six and a half minutes this movie suite really gets going. The orchestra responds well to the music, filling the soundstage with quick crescendos and tense repetition. It works wonderfully well before slowing down. As in any scary movie, there is a first ending to this movie suite, then suddenly there is the danger again and the music thunders on for a couple more minutes before leaving us exactly where we started. Alone in outer space. With a timing of 29:05 this is one you should really enjoy. -MJ

Considered (by many) to be the final installment for this motion picture franchise, Mr. Frizzell is able to span the distance from space to horror with a rapidly paced movie suite that is filled with intense synthesizer based orchestral music that delivers what is fitting for what was to be the last Alien motion picture. Much of the score was sound effects and tension adjustments, but after stripping away those we are left with a suite that quickly gets down to business before running out of steam after the timing of 16:02. Although not my favorite of the four, this certainly belongs with the other Alien suites. Hope you enjoy. -MJ

When I happened on this I was not expecting much, but Mr. Jablonsky fashioned a pulsing, intensely dark movie suite that has to be listened to. Yes we do have the girls choir occasionally lilting into our expectations as well as the steadily rising percussion, but it all works well enough to make you look over your shoulder and wonder. The month of October 2011 ends in the scariest of all the holidays, All Hollows Eve, otherwise referred to as Halloween, so we will have some movie suites that represent some of the better of the motion picture scores that scare the bejeezes out of us. To that end, we have a rare work from 1983 by Mr. Horner that will cause you to stop and wonder as you listen. Much of the score had screeching choral voices which totally detracted from the orchestra. Most of that is now gone and we are left with an orchestral composition that has some choral high points in a suite that holds its own quite well. No, this is not Star Trek nor is it Avatar, but it is filled with a building tension that will grip you. With a timing of 22:24 I hope you enjoy this. -MJ

If you visited this blog before, you probably know that in my estimation, Basil Poledouris is one of the best motion picture score composers of all time. Of course you may not agree with me, and that's okay. On the other hand it's unfortunate that this is one of his lesser known works because it really soars. This movie suite circa 1989 has sweeping strings, musical influences from the South Pacific and a main theme that comfortably carries us on our journey. With a sound that is reminiscent of John Barry's Out Of Africa, this is a lush masterwork that belongs beside the most recognized movie suites. With a timing of 23:28, I think you'll enjoy this one as soon as it begins. -MJ

It's been awhile since we had a classic movie suite, so here is an amazing suite from 1962 from one of the all-time master composer's of motion picture soundtracks, Maurice Jarre. Utilizing the percussion section of the orchestra to get us started, the cues shift back and forth from strings to horns to drums like the shifting sands of the dessert as we are taken on a lyrical musical adventure. Although much of this becomes slightly repetitious, you can forgive Mr. Jarre because that is how it was done 50 years ago. Music by Steve Jablonsky

Mixing orchestral flourishes with thunderous synthesizers, Mr. Joblonsky has scored a movie suite that rarely slows a beat. While sustaining the percussive impact, this music struts down the heroic soundscape into movie music history. The first of this successful series of blockbusters, this movie suite also has some choral moments blended into the tapestry for effect. Although this is a valiant effort, I am struck by the fact that it sounds reminiscent of so many of the other current crop of composers. Did they all attend the same class? Or is it just flattery? On the second installment of this Sci-Fi series, Mr. Jablonsky decided to go the same route that many other contemporary motion picture score composers have gone by using sythesizers to produce much of the music. Along with a mix of voices raised in choral splendor to increase the dramatic, this music runs the gamut. Fortunately for the movie suite, we have minimized the choral and concentrated on the orchestral portions of the music. Still, we have plenty of synth, percussive pounding and strange effects to retain the overall effect of the movie suite. With a timing of 21:20, I hope you enjoy listening. -MJ

The latest Transformers is a sonic blockbuster, filled with aggressive themes, tweaked synthesizers, powerful percussion as well as a few dramatic moments to allow the listener to rest before the final juggernaut. This is our first movie suite by Mr. Jablonsky, who earned his composer chops on many lesser known motion pictures since the early days of this century and some better known television scores. I promise that this will not be the final suite from him either, since we will be showcasing his work from the earlier Transformer pictures as well as a some others. Well, it has finally happened, although I must say that it is only surprising that it took this long. Hang on, because even though this movie suite starts out slowly subdued, it quickly picks up steam. The beginning reminds us of any other war picture with rising drums that build into the horns that are upbeat and tempestuous. When the main theme kicks in after a couple minutes, it slows us down for a brief moment before we suddenly surge into a driving intensity. The conclusion to this suite is "classic" Silvestri with blazing trumpets and the promise of more to come in the near future (a bit like Back To The Future). With a timing of 27:28, you'll be certain to enjoy this one. -MJ

We have a recent blockbuster with a catchy main theme that you just can't stop humming. Add to that the foreboding cues that accompany any mysterious Alien to the screen and we have a movie suite that is newly exciting yet sounds like a throwback to the 80's. Mr. Giacchino has become one prolific composer in the last couple of years. With an Oscar nod for his score in Up, to his latest rendition of the Star Trek franchise, he has shown his chops over and over again. Some say he has borrowed ideas from previous composers for the Super 8 score from the likes of John Williams, Grame Revell and others, but that may be jealousy talking because the final product is entertaining, energetic as well as enlightening. What more could anyone ask of a movie suite? With a timing of 33:46, it seems much quicker than it is and as always, I hope you enjoy. -MJ

Here it is! The final installment for the Harry Potter franchise. Utilizing some of the familiar motifs and themes from earlier versions with plenty of new cues, we are presented with a relentless movie suite of power and conflict. Mr. Desplat does not disappoint as he takes us on a journey that eventually brings the conclusion of good versus evil into the listeners ears and head. I found that after multiple sessions, this really grows on you in so many ways. Whether or not you are an H.P. fan, you should give this a listen. With a nod to the previous versions, this movie suite from the latest Pirates of the Caribbean brings us back to the powerful themes and repetitious action cues that we've learned to expect from Mr. Zimmer. At this point in his career, the composer still uses synthesizers while adding a complete orchestra as well as a choir of voices to give us a sonic experience unlike most other composers. With many thematic cues written by Rodrigo y Gabriela, there is a distinctively Spanish feel to this music, with the use of Spanish guitars and yet we have elected to keep his participation in the movie suite to a minimum. With a timing of just 17:54, this fits in nicely with the previous Pirates' movie suites. Until Pirates of the Caribbean number five is released, I hope you enjoy. -MJ

It seems fitting that this movie suite reminds me of John Philip Sousa, with blazing horns, thunderous background percussion and an upbeat attitude that is infectious. This is our first suite by Mr. Addison, and it will be the last War Picture suite for awhile. Likeable, would be a great description of this movie suite as it smoothly spins toward the fitting conclusion. With a timing of 20:15 we can only wish it were longer. This 2001 HBO mini-series was scored by Michael Kamen, a composer well known for his work on Highlander and other respected scores. The enormous amount of music he wrote for this project spans orchestral cues, choral cues as well as title themes that carry the weight of this production. Due to this, we are fortunate to have two distinctive suites for your enjoyment. The first movie suite only slightly reminds us of other War Picture suites with a full orchestra and strong military themes rushing toward a quick conclusion. The timing for this suite is 17:41. Much different than the usual War Picture Suite, the second movie suite is a solemn yet lush orchestral arrangement mixed with a touch of voices at the beginning and ending. It is quite beautiful and very touching to hear. The timing for this suite is 22:02. Although titled Part I and Part II, they are separate works of pleasure that complement one another. These should keep you busy for some time, but as always, I hope you enjoy them. -MJ

This high flying motion picture from 1968 is filled with marches, fanfares and constantly building cues that just can't be missed. The score was originally penned by Sir William Walton, but the studio dropped his score in favor of Ron Goodwin's more upbeat version only retaining the main theme and a battle sequence. Fortunately, Mr. Goodwin was able to merge the music admirably, offering us a movie suite that delivers a stirring performance and heroic sound that is unmatched. With a timing of 25:01 this may be my favorite War Picture Suite. I know you'll enjoy this one! _MJ

Dirty Dozen, The Movie Suite

Distinctively different from any of the other War Picture Suites, there is a strained note of seriousness in this music that can't be ignored as the opening drums mark the beginning of this movie suite from 1967. Utilizing plenty of percussion thoughout, we are never able to forget that this is the music of a war picture, even when things lighten up for a a few cues, when we hear the familiar tune, "In The Army Now", as it weaves in and out of the suite. About half way through the drums return to signal the final phase of the suite when we are reminded that the results of war are never quite as we hope. With a timing of 25:24, this passes by before you even realize it. Hope you enjoy! -MJ

Talk about well-known! The march from this 1963 movie suite helped define exactly what the music from a War picture should sound like. No doubt, you will probably recognize the march instantly, but listen to the entire suite so you can enjoy the different versions as Mr. Bernstein teases us with bits and pieces of the march throughout the suite. Taking us along with the starts and stops of escaping WWII prisoners of war, there is an ever increasing level of tension that concludes with the final installment of the march. In keeping with our War Picture genre theme, we have a movie suite from 1961 that takes us to the isles of Greece to witness the destruction of an enemy stronghold. Mr. Tiomkin who is best known for his scores for High Noon, The Alamo and It's A Wonderful Life, approached the Oscar-nominated music for Guns of Navarone more like a tone poem; the different themes winding in and out of the fabric of the movie suite. From the expected drums of any war picture to the lyrical Greek sounding Yassua, he managed to take us, his listeners on a magical tour that still holds up well after all these years. With a timing of 29:11, this suite is leisurely but delivers on a grand scale. I hope you enjoy! -MJ

Without a doubt, when this movie was released in 1970, it was apparent to everyone that we were watching an offbeat Vietnam movie that was set during WWII. Huh? Well, this movie suite is certainly a product of the late 60's and early 70's. We have drums. We have a short "pop" cue. When the main theme kicks in, a chorus of whistling opens up before we hear the drums that remind us this is a War Picture after all. The remainder of the suite visits some tense themes and a stirring march before ending with another round of whistlers. This is our first visit by Mr. Schifrin, and it is all in good fun. Certainly not an oscar nomination here, but with a timing of 19:42, you'll probably enjoy this little gem for what it is. -MJ

It may seem like Jerry Goldsmith was the go-to composer for the War Picture genre. It also may be that his work is easier to get access to since he was so well liked. When performed today, the highlights of this motion picture score is often played hand in hand with the Patton score because of the similarity of the theme, but this music is much different than the Patton music is so many ways. Starting with the expected drums, we quickly experience the horns of the main theme, known as the MacArthur march that infrequently winds in and out of the suite to our delight. Early on we experience a sense of foreboding, but it is exuberantly replaced with more percussion and horns to carry us towards the fitting conclusion. With a timing of 18:53 we present to you the MacArthur movie suite in it's entirety. I hope you enjoy it. -MJ

Okay, we should say this at the outset; Jerry Goldsmith did himself proud with this motion picture score. With the signature, fading trumpet fanfare that starts and ends this movie suite we know instantly that this is serious music. The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars in 1971, winning 7, but not for Best Musical Score. We will not debate this omission, but instead we present to you a movie suite that is arguably one of Mr. Goldsmith's best works. With a timing of 19:57, I know that you'll enjoy this one alot. -MJ

This classic movie suite comes to us from the motion picture score that won the Oscar for best score in 1960, the Golden Globe for best score in 1961 and the Grammy in 1961 for the best soundtrack. With all that pedigree, one would expect there must be a gem hidden here and there is. The rousing main theme sounds with horns a-blazing at the opening and this theme is carried throughout the suite in a variety of ways. That is great since the theme is so memorable as it weaves its way towards the final conclusion. With a timing of 16:47, you might want to give this classic a listen. When this motion picture burst on the scene in 1979, John Williams was already well known for his Superman, Jaws, Star Wars and Indiana Jones scores. Naturally, the score for a comedy about an invasion of Hollywood, was not considered in the same class by most soundtrack lovers. That's too bad, because Mr. Williams borrowed from some of his previous scores, in a tongue-in-cheek way and also scored a fantastic main theme that is a stirring march (which he has said many times was his favorite). He even borrowed the brawl theme from the classic motion picture The Quiet Man, originally scored by Victor Young, which pushes this movie suite along at a fantastic pace. With a timing of 33:57, once you give this a listen, you'll really enjoy it. -MJ

When you take into account that this motion picture has spawned countless remakes and the score was ground breaking in so many ways, that it is amazing how fresh and fitting this movie suite actually is. So many of the cues build from simple themes into crescendos that have been copied so many times since, but remember that this music is the original. Mr. Steiner held to his vision by giving us a composition that is still listenable and reflective even after all these years. This is powerful orchestral music that stands the test of time and you have to give it a listen to appreciate the two movie suites that follow this. We have a lyrical movie suite for this 1976 remake of an original classic motion picture. John Barry, who is best known for his work on the James Bond franchise, penned us a moving and lasting tribute that transcends the heart wrenching story graciously. With the limited use of piano and early synthesizer to acompany the orchestra, we are taken on a journey that is very different from the other composer's who tackled this same subject yet this is no less fitting. Although the main theme is used sparingly throughout, we are reminded of it enough to welcome the simple motif. With a timing of 25:02, this is worth a listen. Hope you enjoy. -MJ

This remake of a remake comes to us with a classic feel that sounds more like a tone poem than a motion picture suite. Listening to this on it's own seems to tell a story that takes us from melancholy to sadness, to hope. Mr. Howard's limited usage of a mixed choral has been blended in with the other instruments so well that it was often difficult to tell if it was voices or the subtle introduction of a synthesizer. There was plenty of music to sift through, but with a final timing of 34:10, it seems to pass much too quickly. In case you wondered, at first I did not care for this, but after successive listening, I am now an ardent fan. I hope that you enjoy this. -MJ

With aplomb we are discussing the movie suite from the first of the Chronicles of Narnia motion pictures, composed by Harry Gregson-Williams, best known for his other fine work on the Shrek movies and Kingdom of Heaven. Right from the outset, we are filled with an ominous feel; yet with a deft lightness the music does not falter as the main theme is presented and re-worked throughout. There is a little choral section near the middle of the piece that reminds us of the battle between good and evil before we rush on to the conclusion. We end with the main theme, quietly questioning whether any of this ever really happened. With a timing of 26:01, this movie suite is a great introduction to the Narnia legacy. Hope you enjoy. -MJ

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Music by David Arnold

For the third installment of the Narnia Chronicles, we are visited by Mr. Arnold, who has taken the baton from Henry Gregson Williams and given us a stupendous movie suite that refuses to falter. Starting with mellow phrasing, we are transported to sea aboard a large sailing vessel, the lyrical sound of the waves and the wind filling the billowy sails. Constantly picking up the pace as we go along, Mr. Arnold throws in some choral support to take us to the subdued finale. This has a much different feel than the previous Narnia movie suites by Harry Gregson-Williams, but of course, that is not a bad thing. With a timing of 29:12, you should check this out. We have a rare work by the prolific composer of note, Mr. Hans Zimmer. This one was on the list to find for awhile, then it appeared to my delight. This movie suite is powerful and plays with fire as the listener must hang onto something to enjoy the ride. Mr. Zimmer's earlier work is filled with synthesizers that melt into the orchestra for a seamless, yet very accessable work. With a timing of 25:26, I hope you enjoy! Starting out with a blasting chorus and ending with a similar chorus, this movie suite delivers a period sounding work that is at once interesting as well as enjoyable. This is our first movie suite by David Hirschfelder, one of the premier composers from Australia. Notably he is best kinown for the scores for Shine, Australia and this motion picture which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1998. With a timing of 23:26, if you can get past the vocals at the beginning and the end, you'll no doubt enjoy this one. At least, I do hope so. -MJ

In this sequel we are treated to a movie suite that is only connected with the original Elizabeth movie suite by name only. This movie suite has two composers; Craig Armstrong who is well known for his ground breaking score for Moulin Rouge as well as many other motion pictures and Ar Rahman who is the leading composer of film music in India and is best known in the USA for his score for Slum Dog Millionaire for which he won an Academy Award. It is the first movie suite featured by these composers and we are treated to a rich work that delivers an eastern feel mixed in with synthesizers and choral voices that merge with the orchestral instruments with much bravado as well as some orchestral highlights. This motion picture was a post WWII thriller and the music responds with an unusual festival overture sound that is at once lively, yet still filled with a tightness and pacing that is reminiscent of many film noir scores from other earlier composers such as Franz Waxman or Alex North, yet Mr. Goldsmith is not afraid to take a chance as he delivers an entertaining and complete movie suite. When it was announced that Alexandre Desplat had been chosen to orchestrate the latest Harry Potter franchise, it was very disappointing news. Simply put, most of his other motion picture scores are barely listenable mood music, so due to that, his other scores have not become movie suites. Believe me, although Mr. Desplat is an excellent music technician, his minimalistic approach at creating the "mood" has never transferred well into a compositional movie suite. Recently while attending this motion picture, it was apparant that much of the time, there was simply no music for many of the scenes; in other words long moments of sustained silence! It seemed destiny that this might be the first Harry Potter film without a movie suite to match. Ah, but now that the soundtrack has been released, and the score has been massaged, we have found a movie suite that may be the best of all the Harry Potter suites. Really! So sorry Mr. Williams. So sorry Mr. Doyle. And so very sorry, Mr. Hooper. With a timing of 31:49, I do believe that you'll enjoy this one. -MJ

Living in an age when our real world as we know it may come to an abrupt end on December 21, 2012, it is somewhat comforting that Waterworld offers a suggestion as to our impending outcome in an unreal vision. As for the music accompanying this motion picture, we are blessed that it is a rousing romp of adventure and idyllic themes that jump out at us to grip tightly as we are transported to this wonderful world of water and hope. Passed up in the past, we can now listen to this movie suite with abandon as it takes us away. Hidden on the shelf by the Lord of the Rings and so many others, this short movie suite offers us another glimpse into the musical mind of a master composer. With a timing of 11:20, this is more like a statement of intent, with a full orchestra playing hard and fast, yet once you listen, you'll be impressed with the driving sound that is unlike any other suite that I have listened to. This is another first time movie suite for us, by the composer Mark Mancina, who has proven himself on no less than 50 motion pictures and almost 30 TV series. On the one hand, his versatile nature was perfect for Twister as he uses a small amount of voices, acoustic & electric guitar, as well as the complete orchestra to weave his tale. On the other hand, this score is rather difficult to get, so you are being treated to not only an awesome movie suite, but also a rare one. With a timing of just under 25:00, you'll be swept away. This is the first movie suite to be shared by Bernard Herrmann. When this movie spectacle was released in 1958, fans flocked to see the siblimely strange creatures and magic of Ray Harryhausen, the special effects wizard. What they also heard is now considered one of the masterworks of composer Bernard Herrmann from his lengthy career. Best known for his extensive work with Alfred Hitchcock, Mr. Herrman, was the film-noire composer extraordinaire, but for this score, he went all-out for adventure and highly dramatic cues. A slightly eastern sounding orchestra explodes with horns and percussion with an arabic flourish as the movie suite opens, dragging us into the mix while we experience the musical story of Sinbad. There are some slow moments when your mind wanders before the final notes sweep us to the powerful conclusion. With a timing of 18:54, this frantic work feels like it's only a few minutes long, but if you've never heard this before, I think you'll really enjoy it. -MJ

As usual, we will not comment on the merits of this blockbuster from 2001, except to say that it is another recent attempt by Hollywood to show the relationship of love as the evils of war intrude. The score on the other hand stands out as an excellent example of Hans Zimmer's earlier works before he became one of Hollywoods busiest composers. With his usage of piano, synthesizers and the orchestra with a small dose of choral voices, he does not become stuck in the what may have been, but delivers an understated work that has been overshadowed by so many of his other works, such as Gladiator. With a timing of 25:49, you owe it too yourself to give this a listen, because if you like Mr. Zimmer's work, you'll enjoy this, too! -MJ

The December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor was given a docu-drama feel when this motion picture was released in 1970. Jerry Goldsmith, the well-known master composer of many of the 60's best movie scores such as; The Blue Max and Planet of The Apes was given the nod to pen the score. Chosing a minimalistic approach, Mr. Goldsmith emersed us into Japanese themes and in-your-face drums that he sparsely mixes with the orchestra to create an effective score. Offered here is the movie suite to that score which certainly showcases some of the master's earlier talents for ominous tension and deliberate staging. Now that the golden days of summer are far behind us, and the world series is just a memory, we can home-in on a baseball, movie suite that is surprisingly entertaining. Since this is the first suite we are going to hear by Mr. Newman, we should remember that he penned numerous motion picture scores during the seventies and eighties, but most agree that this is by far, his very best orchestral score. The jazzy feel evokes the feel of the good ole days gone by, yet there are moments of fantasy that are carried off to the extreme when the main theme kicks in about 1/3 of the way in. Later as we're relaxing again, the build to the pre-eminent conclusion is fantastic. With a timing of only 17:57 this movie suite is fun, rewarding and too short! Sure hope you enjoy this one! -MJ

In in a single note, or phrase, or nuance, one can tell greatness. It stands out simply because it exists while overshadowing all the others. Mr. Broughton gives us his very best work to date in this movie suite. There is so much music in the score, that this is the third incarnation for this suite and it is finally ready for consumption. There are other versions of this suite floating around out there, but with a complete timing of 28:10 this one follows the storyline of the motion picture, faithfully merging the choral voices and orchestra on the way to the conclusion. Many of the motion pictures from Hollywood's golden age offer us an opportunity to experience the original masters as they experimented with their craft. This is our first movie suite from Alex North who is best known for his work on Cleopatra and Dragonslayer, but many believe that his work on The Agony and The Ecstacy has been overlooked. From the first sounds of the horns as they reverberate across the soundstage to the understated flutes that signify a burgening artist, we are reminded that this is a majestic undertaking. After all, scoring the events of the painting of the Sistine Chapel must have caused Mr. North considerable concern. He rose above his personal issues though and we are delivered a work that reaches beyond the ages. With a timing of 24:28, this slowly builds to a fitting climax. This may be one that you'll pass on, but after listening, I hope you enjoy. -MJ

Although this is too late for Halloween, it is a full-bloodied, featured movie suite by Mr. Silvstri that does not rest on its laurels but comes out swinging with a bold statement. Well utilized drums beat the charge of the dark avanger as one chases towards a fate worse than death, while the horns of dispair hang around your head. Is it time yet? Listening intently, you'll hear the whispering notes of the full orchestra as it swirls around you, heedless of the dangers ahead. You can't stop, you must go on, so the music presses us forward. After only 20:39 it will be all over. Hopefully when you pause to breath, you'll realize that you enjoyed this one, too. -MJ

In an interesting change of scenery, we have a short movie suite here from Mr. Howard that crosses the lines of musicality. Filled with basic sounds such as beating drums, single lutes, as well as Arabic pipes, this music does a wonderful job of setting the time of the late 1800's and place of the Arabian desert for this motion picture. Still the orchestra is represented in such a way as to cause one to reflect upon how all the different ethnic music of the past world can be combined to entertain us today. Emotionally, this movie suite is mostly about the race to the finish with some short pauses along the way for a man and his horse, so this music may not be for everyone. Yet, if you are a fan of motion picture scores, with a running time of only 14:14, you should take the few minutes that this runs and give it a listen. Who knows, you just might enjoy it. Well, let me tell you that, "YES", we should bother! In fact this movie suite is filled with so many new, fresh themes that you'll keep checking to see who the composer really is. This is music that's meant to be heard and enjoyed. With certainty it carried the motion picture easily upon its shoulders and when listend to the sound all by itself, you'll smile as you are taken into the world of The Patriot. Mr. Williams put aside his Superman, ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones musical roots to concieve a new orchestral sound that is still Williams, but it also offers something else that we rarely hear in most movie suites, the unabashed joy of youth. Bound by the constraints of the images on the screen, he still managed to offer us terror, loss, hope and ultimate success. The sacrifices of those souls who've died in battle, lives on in the music of the classic movies. As ussual, we are not here to discuss the merits of the classic film, but to share the score that lifted the performances of the actors to legends in their own right. Mr. Tiomkin was a mainstay composer of the Hollywood movies of the late 40's, right up into the 60's and is well known for the music on classics such as: It's A Wonderful Life, High Noon and this picture, The Alamo. In this case the movie suite serves this music well, since much of it is hidden among the dialogue and action backdrop throughout the movie. The main theme, known as the Green Leaves of Summer is carried by an accordian merging with the strings of the orchestra, while the Davy Crockett and Alamo themes work together to form a perfectly wonderful movie suite that is both uplifting and memorable. With a timing of 18:23 it's a bit short but only because you are left wanting more. I will bring more of Mr. Tiomkin because I know you'll enjoy this. -MJ

In an attempt to offer movie suites that cover every imaginable style of music, we have a unique offering here that is part symphonic, part march, part folksie and completely engaging. Also this is the first visit of Mr. Burwell, so we'll tread lightly in his honor. This movie suite is much different than the 1960 version, but that's not a bad thing. Filled with emotion, there is a singular message here as we march from the beginning to the fitting conclusion. Along the way we're to visit the hopeless situation of war and death and the determination of a few men who stand to make a difference. The main theme flirts in and out of the music, a simple yet heartfelt motif that inspires us. As the final horns sing we are reminded that we only have one shot to make a difference, so it may as well be now. At least that's how I feel. With a timing of 21:55, you may want to check this out, because you just might enjoy it. -MJ

Sometimes, the score to a motion picture seems to blend seemlessly with the pictures on the screen so well that it seems as if they were created at the same moment, with one goal in mind. Mr. Horner's score to this romantic work of drama lifted him from the doldrums and began his amazing performances in the movies that he scored after this one, such as: Apollo 13, Braveheart and Titanic. Filled with pulsing themes of passion and hope, as well as loss and regret, we are treated to a musical portrait of a timeless nature, of emotions that will be around as long as man. Naysayers may say that Mr. Horner copied John Barry from Dance With Wolves, or that he borrowed heavily from Wagner, but the people that snatched up this music keep it close to the heart, and this score is considered a cult classic by those that are willing to follow James Horner to the very end. As a movie suite, we are presented with a composition with a timing of 28:03 that belongs right up there among the best. Hope you enjoy! -MJ

The tension is thick and deliberate as we drive headlong towards the uncertain future, sure to catch us unaware. Each time I listen to this, I become lost in the music and find the final moments carried by a solemn choir bringing me back to reality. With a timing of 23:30, I hope you enjoy this reality. -MJ

Oh yeah! Talk about a rousing motion picture score to a western that pulls out all the stops and delivers a shot faster than a gunslinger. If you've never heard this music before, you are in for a real treat. When listening to this movie suite, I am reminded of Aaron Copeland, the way the main theme spins in and out of control. Is this Billy The Kid? No it's not. Fortunately, it is Silverado even though you might check every once in a while to be certain. We are taken on a great musical ride with nary a detour with this orchestral tour-de-force. With a timing of 33:06, I think that you'll enjoy this one! -MJ

Actually, this movie suite is not a convenient orchestral composition, instead it is more like a fine poetry of musical phrases that has been carefully quilted together to enjoy. There are the solos and intensive violin work from the famed virtuoso Itshak Perlman as well as some excellent piano work from someone. Connecting those instruments are the moments of orchestra that may be considered to be a massive quartet than anything else. Still, it is evokable music that belongs way up there on the mantel of movie suites. I really hope you enjoy this for the first or the next time. -MJ

What a busy month it has been. So sorry, but haven't had enough time to keep up with this. Today we have a seldom heard, if not completely ignored movie suite from the master, Mr. James Horner. If you have ever seen this motion picture, then you must have children, or at the very least, spent time around them, since this movie is geared to the younger members of our species. As far as the music goes, that is a shame, because Mr. Horner scored a terrific piece for the beginning of time when life is wonderful and full of hope for the future. Actually this work is more like a symphony than a soundtrack score and judging by the scarcity of the availability of this music, many others must also agree. There are so many end-of-days movies out there, but this one had James Horner scoring the music so at least when there was nothing happening onscreen the fine music kept us going to the final conclusion. This music is purely Mr. Horner. It sounds vaguely familiar, particularly when there is a piano riff, maybe a little like Rocketeer; yet when the main theme soars we are filled with the feelings of hope and the terror of life's choices. Why does one person live and another person die? We can't answer that, but it is certain that we are all given chances and it's how we reacted in those moments that makes a difference. That may be what this suite says to you and since it is entertaining on it's own merits as a movie suite, I'm happy to share it with you. In a perfect world, we would all have a composer such as Mr. Hans Zimmer to score our life's pursuits and accomplishments. If one could choose, this movie suite would be mine! Powerful. Graceful. The orchestra sounds as if it were huge and the occasional chorus blends in so well you hardly notice. Teeming with action on the edge, yet filled with purpose and focused on the prize, this is certainly one of, if not the best from Mr. Zimmer. Ah, if only...still we are lucky that in this world we have this magnificent music to hear as often as we wish, whenever we wish to escape to another time in place, if only in our head. With a singular piano morphing into a gentle orchestral focus, we feel the longing of the music before a lone violin takes us to the next orchestral phrases. There are no real themes, yet this short movie suite is subtle as it takes us on its journey of the moment. This score was nominated by the Academy Awards for Best Original Score in 2003 so if you haven't heard it, here is your chance. Still keeping with our Civil War theme, we have another movie suite taken from the landmark, television mini-series. Better known for his other works such as the Rocky theme, Mr. Conti was given the task of scoring countless hours to accompany the drama and on-screen action of this Civil War epic. The main theme grabs our attention before spinning off into a steady myriad of contortions. Maybe a bit repetitious, the variety is grand in scale while putting us into the mix of war with some thunderous drums and gallant horns to pick us up. This is such great music, no doubt you will find yourself humming it long after the movie suite ends. It still feels like a work in progress, due in no small part to all of the available music. Please understand that it was difficult to keep this suite at a reasonable length, yet the timing ended up at 40:03, probably my longest (okay I looked and Avatar is my longest @ 43:51), which of course I still hope you enjoy it. Sticking with our Civil War Epics, I have a treat for you that is unique. When you think of movies or epic motion pictures or the Civil War, you can't help but think of Gone With The Wind. This music is well-known, almost as much as the film, but listening to the score reminds us of the limitations of when it was made. The first movie suite is from the original 1941 score, which was cleaned up and remastered into stereo, but I warn you that there are numerous artifacts like hiss that are present. Also the cues did not gel into a real composition but we still have something that resembles a movie suite. With a timing of only 14:40, go ahead and give it a listen. Enjoy! -MJ

In celebration of the 147th year anniversary (July 1-3, 1863) of the Battle of Gettysburg, we have a powerful movie suite from Mr. Edelman that encompasses the bitterness of that bloody conflict. The main theme begins with a trumpet that is joined by drums which reminds us that this music is about war. This unusual Civil War movie suite comes to us from the pen of James Horner who has taken an unusual approach by putting us into the middle of the emotional impact of the motion picture. Beginning with a subdued gospel choir, the quiet strings of the main theme creep up on us before the music is underscored by the steady beating of the drums as we are shakenly reminded that war is bloody hell. The timbre of the voices along with the strength of the orchestra is haunting, yet strangely familiar to Horner fans. Normally I do not go for choral works in movie suites, but when the voices are integral as another group of orchestral instruments the results are glorious (pun intended). With a timing of exactly 24:00, when you experience this, I know that you'll enjoy. -MJ

Speaking of "epic", the American Civil War was an an event that helped shape the USA into what it is today. Many fine motion pictures have inspired many to create those significant moments for us to experience and of course, the accompanying scores also come with inspirational messages all of their own. First we have a lone violin that is answered by a single clarinet before the main theme kicks in, the strings soaring. As the snare drums kick in we know for certain that this movie suite is about war! Once the subdued choral voices announce the start of a lone piano before they mix together with the orchestra. Ending with a lone piano, this is a solemn yet touching work and if you've never heard it, you are missing something quite special. With a timing of 24:45, I hope you'll enjoy. -MJ

As usual, I refuse to discuss the motion picture, leaving that for others, but if there were any short-comings, it can not be blamed on the music. With a swiftness that enhances his ability to deliberately put the listener into the center of the action, Mr. Horner has delivered us a movie suite with gorgeous Spanish themes that is at once uplifting and inspiring. With a few minutes of love and a fun chase thrown in for good measure, the main theme is repeated enough to draw every note together to form a cohesive whole. Although this motion picture is about many things, much of it also takes place in New York City, which is keeping with our current theme. Unmistakably John Williams, which is a good thing, this movie suite has a lyrical main theme (which is reminiscent of the legendary Raiders theme) that puts the listener into the old-Irish frame of mind of the main characters, while sweeping us along the musical journey as it winds it's way through the steady paces of one form or another. If you haven't heard this music before, you must add it to your library. With a timing of 21:34, this seems to it grows on you from one listen to the next and before you know it, you've found another movie suite that you love. I really hope you enjoy. Since we seem to be in a New York state of mind, here is another movie suite from a motion picture that takes place in another time and place; a time of elegance, innocence and a place that was growing into a world class city of distinction. This is the first suite we'll call: Soft n Cuddly (SnC)! Mr. Berstein took a softer approach with flowing waltzes and softly rising strings to paint a passionate picture of Love found, Love attempted and Love lost, with a hope filled climax that get's one going to do it all over again. There are many other SnC movie suites floating around which we will get to as time allows. Put this on some Sunday morning during brunch or whenever you want to relax (I don't mean sleep) to some excellent movie music. With a timing of 22:59, I hope that you'll enjoy. -MJ

Once upon a time a team of composers scored a motion picture that was filled with the interesting sound of electric guitars, droning bagpipes, sexy string motifs and just about anything else found laying around. The resulting movie suite is presented here in all its gloriousness and insane musicality. My biggest complaint is that there should have been more to share, but this is all there is, except for some vocal selections and short folk dances, that did not belong in an orchestral suite. Some may ask, "what about the guitar work, why does that belong?" You'll have to ask either Mr. Shore or Mr. Gabriel for that answer. With a timing of just 13:20, this is fun and interestingly entertaining. Hope you enjoy! -MJ

Lately, it's been difficult to put up a new blog, but today we are rewarded for our perseverance as we return with a heroic movie suite that gives new meaning for building to a conclusion. Mr. Horner starts us with a lyrically lone piano that blends into the main theme that is a nod to the serial movies of the golden age of motion pictures. Before we know it, we're drawn into an emotional roller coaster as the music soars from tenderness to outright attack before settling into a steady conclusion that lasts for half of the work. If someone has not heard of this little animated film, that's not too surprising, but if you haven't heard the music that accompanied the picture, then here is a movie suite that will give you a good idea of what you may have missed. Mr. Howard starts slowly as if he wants us to experience the creative flow before consistently building into a swift moving pace that carries the remainder of the work. Utilizing the orchestra with a sparse spattering of voices, we are quickly carried along before the sudden ending only 16:31 later. Although this isn't my favorite, it's a good listen once in awhile. For once, we are going to go back and discuss a wonderful movie suite that has graced the files of my hard-drive for awhile now. When this movie came out in 1979, I saw it on the big screen and was thrilled with the way the music was so integral to the action. As soon as possible, the vinyl LP was added to my collection and once I began putting movie suites to cassette, this one was one of the first. Unfortunately, the CD for this was not easy to locate, but recently it was found. With a spunky attitude that is at once upbeat and a bit quirky, Mr. Goldsmith blended a quasi-gaslight sound of the horns with orchestral bliss that seems to work. The cello riff that makes up the main theme is catchy and as you hear it throughout, you'll have a hard time getting it out of your head. With a timing of 22:11, I certainly hope you'll enjoy this one, too. -MJ
